The only tropical zoo in the continental United States, Zoo Miami keeps its animals in open-air, cage-free exhibits grouped by geographic region. The 750-acre grounds are home to over 3,000 animals, including endangered species like the Florida panther, Asian elephant, and Orinoco crocodile. The Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit recreates the native habitats just beyond the zoo's fences. It is a long way south of the city — allow at least half a day, and be prepared for heat, as there is a lot of walking with limited shade.
