Freedom Tower

Address 600 Biscayne Boulevard

This 1925 Mediterranean Revival tower, modelled after the Giralda in Seville, was originally the headquarters of the Miami Daily News. It earned its name in the 1960s when it served as the processing centre for Cuban refugees fleeing Castro's regime — Miami's Ellis Island. Today it houses the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College, with rotating contemporary exhibitions. The tower is a National Historic Landmark and one of Miami's most recognisable buildings, its illuminated silhouette visible from across Biscayne Bay.

story: > Between 1962 and 1974, more than 650,000 Cuban exiles were processed through this building, receiving medical examinations, documents, and their first steps toward a new life in the United States.
