The 54th Regiment Memorial honors one of the first official African-American units to fight for the Union in the American Civil War. The regiment's service helped change northern attitudes toward Black soldiers, even as its men fought for equal pay and recognition.
The memorial stands opposite the Massachusetts State House, making it an easy and worthwhile stop while walking Beacon Hill, Boston Common, and the Freedom Trail area.
