Museum of African American History

Boston's Museum of African American History preserves two of the most important Black history sites in New England: the African Meeting House, built in 1806, and the Abiel Smith School, founded in 1835 as the nation's oldest public school for Black children.

The museum is the best anchor for walking Beacon Hill's Black Heritage Trail. Its restored buildings tell the story of Boston's free Black community, abolitionist organising, education, worship, and the city's role in the Underground Railroad.
