The Pierce House

Working-family colonial house museum in Dorchester

The Pierce House was built in 1683 and stayed in the same family for ten generations before becoming a museum. It is not a grand merchant's mansion, which is exactly why it is interesting: the rooms show how working colonists and later Bostonians adapted the same house over centuries.

Tours focus on the building's changing fabric, including original wooden features and later additions. It is a good Dorchester stop if you want Boston history outside the Freedom Trail.
