The Churches of Convent Carmo were built in the 18th century as part of a Carmelite complex near Praça XV. After the Portuguese court arrived in Rio in 1808, the churches became bound up with royal life: coronations, weddings, funerals, and the city's former cathedral role all passed through this corner of Centro. Look inside for gilded Baroque and Rococo woodwork, especially the carving associated with Inacio Ferreira Pinto.
