Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow)

Santiago Calatrava's futuristic science museum on the revamped Porto Maravilha waterfront

The Museu do Amanhã is a science museum focused on humanity's future, designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2015 on the revamped waterfront of the Porto Maravilha district. The building is spectacular: a long white structure with moving solar fins and a reflecting pool, projecting over Guanabara Bay like a white egret about to take flight.

Inside, the permanent collection explores five major questions about the future — Cosmos, Earth, Anthropocene, Tomorrow, Us — through large-format interactive displays, projections, and immersive environments. The museum pitched itself at families and school groups but the content is rigorous enough for adults. The surrounding Porto Maravilha district has been transformed from a derelict port zone: the VLT tram connects it to Praça XV and Central do Brasil station. Combine with the nearby Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) on the same waterfront.

A story
The museum was conceived as the centrepiece of Rio's Porto Maravilha urban regeneration project, which transformed the city's derelict port zone ahead of the 2016 Olympics. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the building's solar panels and fins move to track the sun, reducing energy consumption — a live demonstration of the sustainable themes explored inside.
