Technically in Niteroi rather than Rio, but a worthwhile excursion. This historic fort guarded the entrance to Guanabara Bay and offers wonderful views of Sugar Loaf from across the water. Take the ferry from Praca XV in Centro to Niteroi, then catch the Neltur tourist bus. The perspective on Rio's skyline from this side of the bay is unforgettable.
