A car-free island in Guanabara Bay, reached by ferry from Praca XV in Centro (about one hour). Emperor Dom Pedro II used to retreat here to relax. Today it is a quiet, romantic escape from the city -- horse-drawn carts serve as taxis, locals are friendly, and you can eat well and cheaply. The ferry ride itself is worth it for the views of the Rio skyline and the Rio-Niteroi Bridge.
