Paço Imperial

Paço Imperial is Rio's former imperial palace, built in 1743 on Praça XV. Its restrained colonial facade is far less showy than the word palace suggests, but the building was central to Brazil's royal and imperial history.

Today it works well as part of a walk through Centro's historic core, close to the waterfront, old churches, and cultural centres.
