Parque do Flamengo

Vast modernist waterfront park — the "Aterro" — with lawns, sports courts, and bay views running along the Flamengo shore

The Parque do Flamengo — universally called the Aterro — is the great green ribbon laid out on land reclaimed from Guanabara Bay in the 1960s, with landscaping by Roberto Burle Marx and a modernist plan that remains one of Brazil's landmark public spaces. It runs for kilometres along the waterfront, linking Flamengo to the city centre, and on Sundays the bayside lanes close to traffic and fill with cyclists, runners, and skaters.

There is a beach (better for the view than for swimming), football and volleyball courts, playgrounds, and the Monument to the Dead of World War II at its northern end. It is where Flamengo and the surrounding neighbourhoods come to exercise and unwind, with Sugarloaf framing the bay across the water.
