Ali Amjad's Clock Tower

This small Victorian clock tower on the north bank of the Surma River, right beside the Keane Bridge, is the oldest functioning public clock in Bangladesh. It was commissioned in the 1870s by a local zamindar, Ali Ahmad Khan, and named after his son Ali Amjad — the boy had asked his father to install a clock so the family could hear the time from across the river.

The clock itself is unremarkable as architecture, but as a survivor of the late colonial period and a continuous timepiece for the city it carries serious sentimental weight. It is also a convenient anchor point on the riverfront walk: combine with the bridge, the Surma boat ride, and the food carts along the embankment.
