Malnicherra Tea Estate

Malnicherra sits on the northern edge of Sylhet city and is, by reputation, the oldest commercial tea estate in the subcontinent. The terraces of clipped tea bushes spread across rolling hills only a few kilometres from the centre, and the working factory still processes leaves from the surrounding fields.

Visitors can walk the estate roads freely; ask permission at the gate for a tour of the factory, which is sometimes possible during processing season. Mornings are best for atmosphere and for catching the pickers at work. Combine with Lakkatura for a half-day tour of the in-town tea landscape.

A story
Established in 1849 by the British planter James Finlay, Malnicherra was the first commercial tea estate in the Indian subcontinent — predating the more famous Assam plantations by several years and laying the foundation for an industry that still defines this part of Bangladesh.
