Keane Bridge

The Keane Bridge is one of the city's most recognised landmarks — a riveted steel cantilever bridge crossing the Surma River near the heart of the old town. At night the bridge is lit up and reflected in the river, and the walkway is busy with locals taking the evening air. It still carries vehicle traffic, so cross carefully.

The riverfront on either side is a good place to watch local life: small boats running across to the south bank, fishermen, families taking selfies, and food vendors. Combine the bridge with Ali Amjad's Clock on the same stretch of riverbank for a brief but atmospheric old-town walk.

A story
Built in 1936 and named after the British governor of Assam Sir Michael Keane, this steel cantilever bridge over the Surma River was the first major bridge in the region and still defines Sylhet's skyline. The original truss was so cleverly designed that it survived a 1971 demolition attempt by retreating Pakistani forces with only superficial damage.
