Museum of Rajas

The Museum of Rajas (also called the Folk Museum) occupies an old zamindar's residence and displays the everyday objects, costumes, tools, and instruments of the indigenous and rural communities of the Sylhet region — Khasia, Manipuri, Garo, and Bengali villagers. The collection is small but well chosen, with detailed labels in Bengali and English.

The building itself, a partially restored colonial-era house, is part of the appeal. Visits are quick (an hour is plenty) and offer an antidote to the rapid modernisation of the city — many of the crafts shown here are still practiced in villages within a day's drive.
