Jaintiapur ruins

The ruins at Jaintiapur include the shells of the royal palace and an unusual circular brick structure thought to have been a temple platform, scattered across an open meadow on the way to Jaflong. The site is poorly signposted and visitor numbers are low, which adds to the atmosphere.

A small monolith field nearby holds standing stones erected by the Jaintia kings — square megaliths up to ten feet tall, arranged in groups, similar to the ones found across the border in the Khasi villages of Meghalaya. Combine with Jaflong for a single day's outing.

A story
Jaintiapur was the capital of the Jaintia Kingdom — a small but stubborn hill state that resisted Mughal rule for centuries and survived as a protectorate into the early 19th century, before being absorbed into British India in 1835. The ruins on the Bangladeshi side of the border are all that survives; the rest of the kingdom lies in modern Meghalaya.
