Built in 1892 by Sultan Aga Khan III as a famine-relief project that employed a thousand local workers, the palace is a long pink building of Italianate arches and verandahs set in 19 acres of gardens north of the river. Aga Khan IV donated it to India in 1969 as a memorial to Gandhi.
The interior is now a small museum with Gandhi's spectacles, sandals, letters, and personal effects, along with photographs and excerpts from his Pune period. The pace is gentle; allow an hour to walk the rooms and the garden. The palace is in Yerwada, easily reached by auto-rickshaw from the centre or Koregaon Park.
