Mahadji Shinde Chhatri

A memorial pavilion in Wanowrie commemorating the eighteenth-century Maratha general Mahadji Shinde, who held the centre of Hindustan together for three decades after the disaster at Panipat. The structure is a small Rajasthani-style pavilion of carved sandstone, more ornate than anything else of its era in Pune.

The temple complex around it is still in active worship; the chhatri itself stands on the spot where Shinde was cremated in 1794. Easy to combine with a visit to the Okayama Friendship Garden a few kilometres south.
