Kasba Ganapati Temple

The gram daivat or guardian deity of Pune. Tradition holds the temple's small swayambhu (self-manifested) Ganesh idol was installed by Shivaji's mother Jijabai in the seventeenth century, making it the oldest in the city; the present small stone shrine is on Kasba Peth, the medieval core of Pune.

During Ganesh Chaturthi the procession of Pune's eleven manacha (honoured) Ganpati idols starts here. The temple is small, easy to miss, and the visit takes ten minutes -- but if you are walking through the old city this is the symbolic centre.
