A hilltop fort 25 kilometres southwest of Pune, perched on a cliff at 1,300 metres above sea level. The walls and gates are ruined but the position is spectacular: a long curving ridge with sheer drops on three sides and views that reach the next range of the Ghats on a clear day.
You can drive most of the way to the top and walk the last fifteen minutes, or trek up from Atkarwadi village at the base -- a steep hour through scrub and boulder. At the summit, local women sit by small stoves selling fresh hot bhakri, pitla, kanda bhaji, and tall steel glasses of taak (buttermilk). Eating this on the ramparts looking across the Sahyadris is among the better food experiences in the region. Weekends are crowded; go midweek if possible.
