Empress Botanical Garden

A 39-acre garden in the cantonment, established under the British in 1830 and named for Queen Victoria after she was declared Empress of India in 1877. The garden is run today by the Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India and is one of the calmer green spaces in central Pune.

The mango orchard is well-stocked with named varieties, the flower beds change with the season, and the old colonial layout -- paths converging on a central pavilion -- is still legible. Entry costs a small fee; mornings are best, when the schoolchildren on field trips have not yet arrived.
