Afif-Abad Garden

Qajar palace garden with a military museum and arms collection

The Afif-Abad Garden sits west of the city centre in a leafy district that was once the suburban retreat of Shiraz's wealthy. The grounds were laid out in the late 19th century around a substantial mansion built for the governor and later used as a summer residence by the Pahlavi royal family. Tall plane trees, sour-orange groves, and a long axial pool give it the structure of a classic Persian garden, with a domed pavilion at the centre.

The palace itself now houses a military museum with one of the better collections of historic Iranian weapons in the country: swords, daggers, firearms, and ceremonial armour going back several centuries. The garden is open and free to walk through, and is one of the most pleasant places to sit on a hot afternoon.
