Tomb of Hafez

Mausoleum of Persia's most beloved poet, set in a cypress garden.

Hafez (1315–1390) is the most beloved poet in the Persian language, and his mausoleum draws more visitors than almost any other site in Shiraz. The tomb itself is an open marble pavilion set in a garden of cypress trees and orange blossom. Iranians come here in numbers — to recite verses, to sit by the pool, to consult the Divan of Hafez in the traditional way (open the book at random and the verse you find is your fortune).

The teahouse in the grounds, arranged around a rectangular pool with cushioned seating, is one of the best places in the city to slow down.

A story
Hafez refused to leave Shiraz even when the Mongol ruler Timur summoned him to Samarkand. When Timur finally met him and demanded an explanation for a poem that seemed to give away two great cities for a single mole on a beloved's cheek, Hafez replied that it was through such extravagance that he had become as poor as Timur could see. Timur apparently found this charming.
