Vakil Bathhouse

18th-century Zand hammam with frescoed ceilings, now a museum

Karim Khan's bathhouse, completed in the 1770s as part of the Zand-era complex that includes the bazaar and mosque, is one of the most atmospheric historic hammams in Iran. The vaulted brick chambers — the cold room, the warm room, and the central steam hall — are lit by small octagonal skylights and decorated with delicate stuccowork.

It is no longer a working bath. Inside, life-size wax figures sit on the platforms acting out the rituals of a 19th-century bath day, which is either charming or kitsch depending on your tolerance for museum mannequins. The architecture itself is worth the entrance fee. Allow half an hour, and combine with the Vakil Bazaar and Mosque next door.
