Tomb of Khwaju Kermani

14th-century poet's tomb beside the Allahu Akbar Gorge

Khwaju Kermani, a 14th-century Persian poet from Kerman, lived much of his later life in Shiraz and was buried at the entrance to the Allahu Akbar Gorge — the dramatic cleft in the mountains north of the city that historically marked the approach for caravans coming from Isfahan. Travellers arriving from the north used to exclaim "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") at their first sight of Shiraz from the pass, which is how the gorge got its name.

The tomb itself is a small, restored complex at the foot of the cliff, less visited than the Hafez and Saadi sites but worth combining with them. The viewpoint above the gorge — reached by stairs cut into the rock — gives one of the best panoramas of the city.
