Astaneh Seyyed Ala'edin Hossein

Less-visited mirrored shrine near Shah Cheragh

Often overlooked because the more famous Shah Cheragh sits a few hundred metres away, the Astaneh Seyyed Ala'edin Hossein is the mausoleum of another descendant of the Shia Imams who died in Shiraz in the 9th century. The current complex dates mostly from the Safavid period, with a domed central chamber and a courtyard that fills up in the late afternoon.

Like Shah Cheragh, the interior is faced in mirror mosaic, though on a much smaller scale. It is a working shrine — pilgrims pray, sleep in the cool courtyards, and pass through quietly. Visiting is straightforward, dress is conservative.
