When the salt concentration is high enough, the bacteria in Lake Maharlu turn the water pink — an extraordinary, almost lurid colour against the surrounding browns and ochres of the Fars plateau. The lake lies in a shallow basin about 30 km southeast of Shiraz and is one of the more unusual day trips from the city.
The water level varies seasonally and the lake is highly affected by drought; some years it disappears almost entirely. When it is full, the rim of pink salt crystals along the shore is unforgettable. Combine with a visit to Persepolis or Pasargadae for a full day out of town. There is no infrastructure at the lake — bring water and sun protection.
