Hongdae

Named after nearby Hongik University, Hongdae is Seoul's creative youth district — part indie music scene, part street art gallery, part late-night playground. The area around the main gate buzzes with buskers, breakdancers, and portrait artists, especially on weekend evenings when the Free Market and street performances take over. The club scene runs deep, from intimate live music venues playing Korean indie and hip-hop to warehouse-sized dance clubs that don't close until dawn. During the day, the side streets reveal character: vintage clothing shops, independent bookstores, quirky themed cafes, and affordable Korean barbecue joints. Hongdae has gotten more commercial over the years, pushing some of the original indie spirit toward neighboring Yeonnam-dong, but it remains the best place in Seoul to feel the city's restless, youthful creative energy.
