Uireung is the burial complex of King Gyeongjong (r. 1720–1724), the twentieth king of the Joseon dynasty, and his second queen consort Seonui. Set in the wooded hills of Seongbuk-gu, the site is one of the more tranquil royal tombs within the city — far less visited than the grander complexes at Donggureung or Seolleung.
The ceremonial path leads through a grass-covered approach to the burial mounds, flanked by carved stone figures of officials and animals in the classic Joseon style. The forested hillside setting gives the place a contemplative atmosphere. Gyeongjong's reign was brief and troubled — caught between rival court factions — which makes this quiet resting place a fitting memorial.
Admission is inexpensive and the site gets very few foreign visitors. Combine it with the nearby Yeonghwiwon royal tomb complex for a half-day in the hills.
