Seoul Museum of Art

Run by the Seoul metropolitan government, SeMA occupies a striking building next to Deoksugung Palace in the heart of the city. The museum focuses on contemporary and modern Korean art, offering a window into a scene that most international visitors overlook in favor of the palace circuit. Main exhibitions are often free, which makes it an easy addition to a Deoksugung visit. The permanent collection traces Korean art from the early 20th century through today, while rotating shows feature emerging local and international artists. There's also an outdoor sculpture park. The location between City Hall and the palace makes it a natural pause during a downtown walk.
