This bell pavilion at the entrance to Jongno has been Seoul's timekeeper since the Joseon dynasty — the great bell was rung at dawn and dusk to signal the opening and closing of the city gates. The current pavilion is a 1979 reconstruction, but the tradition continues: every New Year's Eve, tens of thousands gather to hear the bell ring at midnight. The bell-ringing ceremony is one of Seoul's most symbolic moments.
