Yeonghwiwon

Royal tombs of King Gojong's concubine and son in a wooded park

Address Jongno-gu, Seoul

A small, wooded royal tomb site tucked into the hillside near Changgyeonggung Palace. Yeonghwiwon holds the tomb of Lady Sunheon (Sunsheon-gwibi), a concubine of King Gojong, and alongside it sits Sunginwon, the tomb of their son Crown Prince Uimin (Yi Un), the last crown prince of the Joseon dynasty.

The compound is much quieter than Seoul's larger royal palaces and makes for a peaceful detour. The graves sit in a traditional arrangement among mature pines, following the same geomantic principles as the grander Joseon royal tombs outside the city. Free entry.
