Built in 1885 by the Cantonese merchant community, this assembly hall on Tran Phu Street is notable for its intricate wood carvings, colourful ceramic mosaics, and a large courtyard with a decorative stone fountain. The main hall is dedicated to Quan Cong and remains an active place of worship. Better preserved than some of the other assembly halls and less crowded than Phuc Kien.
Cantonese Assembly Hall
Beautifully restored hall of the Cantonese Chinese community
A story
The hall's most striking feature is its main altar, which honours Quan Cong, the deified Chinese general famous for his loyalty and righteousness. Sailors and merchants prayed here for safe passage and fair dealings — qualities that mattered in a trading port where a handshake was the only contract.
