Twenty minutes north of the centre on the Princes Road, Colo-i-Suva is a 2.5-square-kilometre patch of mahogany and native rainforest with walking trails, freshwater pools, and a couple of waterfalls. The Falls Trail loop takes about an hour and a half and leads past two pools deep enough for a swim — the cold water is a relief on a hot Suva afternoon.
The forest is thick with birdlife — silktails, fantails, parrots — and reasonably easy underfoot in dry weather, but a slick mess after rain. Take repellent; the mosquitoes are persistent.
