Jewish Quarter

Budapest's Jewish Quarter in the VII District is where history and hedonism collide. The neighborhood is anchored by the Great Synagogue on Dohány Street, the largest synagogue in Europe, with its onion-domed towers and moving Holocaust memorial in the courtyard. But the area's modern fame comes from its ruin bars — derelict buildings turned into sprawling, eclectic drinking dens. Szimpla Kert, the original and still the best, occupies an entire former apartment building filled with mismatched furniture, bathtubs, and art installations. The streets between are a gallery of murals and street art, and the nightlife scene is among the most energetic in Europe. By day, the quarter reveals a more layered character — Jewish heritage walks, independent bookshops, and a growing food scene with everything from langos stalls to contemporary Hungarian restaurants. Don't just come for the bars, but definitely don't skip them either.
