Gresham Palace

Standing at the Pest end of the Chain Bridge, Gresham Palace is one of Budapest's finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture. Built in 1906 for the Gresham Life Assurance Company of London, it fell into neglect during the communist era before a painstaking restoration turned it into a luxury hotel in 2004. Even if you are not a guest, you can walk into the lobby to admire the extraordinary stained glass ceiling, ornate wrought-iron peacock gates, and mosaic floors. The facade is dense with carved figures, ceramic tiles, and organic flourishes typical of the Secessionist style. It is best appreciated on foot from Szechenyi Square, where you can take in the full sweep of the building.
