This massive palace complex crowns Castle Hill on the Buda side, dominating the Danube skyline. Originally built in the fourteenth century, it has been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly — by the Ottomans, the Habsburgs, and most recently after near-total devastation in World War II. Today the sprawling Baroque structure houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. The views from the terrace over the Danube toward the Parliament building are among the best in the city. You can reach the hill by funicular from the Chain Bridge, by bus, or on foot through the palace gardens. Allow a full morning if you plan to explore both museums.
