The Széchenyi Hill Children's Railway is one of Budapest's most unusual family-friendly outings. The narrow-gauge line runs through the wooded Buda Hills, with children handling many station and conductor duties under adult supervision, a tradition inherited from the socialist-era pioneer railway system.
The ride is enjoyable for the forest scenery as well as the novelty. Combine it with the cogwheel railway, chairlift, or short hill walks to turn it into a half-day away from the Danube-side monuments and thermal baths.
