MAUTO — National Automobile Museum

Turin built most of Italy's cars for a century, and the National Automobile Museum is the official monument to that fact. Two hundred vehicles, dating from 1769 to the present, are arranged across a dramatic three-storey hall designed by Spanish architect François Confino as a sequence of cinematic set-pieces.

You move from the dawn of the internal combustion engine through period rooms (a 1920s racetrack, a 1950s Italian street) to a vast gallery of Formula 1 cars on a curved ramp. The Fiat collection is the heart of it — the Topolino, the 500, the Panda — but Bugatti, Ferrari and Lancia are well represented. Even visitors with no special interest in cars come out impressed.
