Founded in 1824 when King Carlo Felice purchased Bernardino Drovetti's collection of Egyptian antiquities, the Museo Egizio is second in importance only to Cairo's Egyptian Museum. Twelve rooms across three floors house over 30,000 exhibits, including the famous black granite statue of Ramses II, the remarkably preserved tomb of the architect Kha and his wife Merit, and an extensive collection of papyri documenting religious cults, scientific research, and daily life in ancient Egypt.
