Santuario della Consolata

The most visited church in Turin, dedicated to the city's patron Madonna della Consolata. Behind a relatively plain neoclassical facade is a remarkable late-seventeenth-century interior by Guarino Guarini and Filippo Juvarra: an elongated hexagonal sanctuary, an oval choir, and a series of nesting elliptical chapels that demonstrate just how far Baroque architects could push the rulebook.

Around the church a network of shrines and ex-voto plaques marks two centuries of thanks for miraculous interventions — there are over three thousand of them. Stop for a bicerin afterwards at Caffè al Bicerin, immediately opposite, which has served the same hot chocolate-and-coffee drink to pilgrims since 1763.
