Teatro Regio

Turin's opera house. The original 1740 Benedetto Alfieri building survived two centuries until a 1936 fire gutted the auditorium; what you see today is a daring 1973 redesign by Carlo Mollino that has aged into a classic of post-war Italian architecture — a futuristic ruby-and-gold cavern under a 1,200-bulb cluster chandelier.

Verdi's La forza del destino and Puccini's La bohème both premiered here. Season runs October to June; backstage tours operate most weekends and are worth the small fee for a look at Mollino's auditorium even if opera is not your thing.
