The Cat of Kazan is a small bronze sculpture of a fat cat reclining on a cushion under a striped canopy, at the southern end of Bauman Street near Tukay Square. The statue commemorates a real historical trade in Kazan cats — known across Russia in the 18th century for their hunting ability — and is one of the city's most photographed objects.
The sculpture was installed in 2009 and is rubbed by passers-by for luck; certain parts are noticeably brighter than the rest of the bronze. A pleasant excuse to stop for a moment on a walk along Bauman.
