Epiphany Cathedral

The Epiphany Cathedral stands on Bauman Street about halfway between the Kremlin and Tukay Square. The 19th-century red-brick bell tower, 75 metres high, is the tallest structure in central Kazan and the most easily recognised landmark on the main boulevard. The cathedral itself is older, an 18th-century Baroque church with a Pskovian belfry style.

For a small fee you can climb the bell tower for one of the best views of central Kazan — Kremlin to the north, the modern centre to the east, the Volga to the west. The cathedral hosts services daily; access to the body of the church is free.

A story
The opera bass Feodor Chaliapin, born in Kazan in 1873, was baptised in the Epiphany Cathedral. A bronze statue of him stands in the small square just outside the entrance, holding a top hat at his side and looking up at the bell tower that defined his earliest memories.
