A bronze statue of the great Russian opera bass Feodor Chaliapin stands in front of the Epiphany Cathedral on Bauman Street, the cathedral where he was baptised in 1873. Chaliapin grew up in Kazan and started singing in the cathedral choir before leaving for Moscow and a world career.
The statue, by the local sculptor Andrey Balashov, was unveiled in 1999. Chaliapin is shown standing with one hand at his side and a top hat held loosely in the other, looking up at the bell tower. The Chaliapin Opera Festival in February at the nearby Musa Jalil Opera House celebrates the same connection.
