Lake Kaban is the long urban lake that defines the western edge of the Old Tatar Quarter, with a paved promenade running for several kilometres along its banks. The northern end is the most pleasant — cafes, paddleboats in summer, ice skating in winter, and views back toward the Kremlin.
The lake is divided by causeways into three connected basins: Lower, Middle, and Upper Kaban. The Lower Kaban, closest to the centre, is the easiest to walk around in an hour. A drained and replanted promenade runs the full length of the western shore.
