The Kazan Arena, on the north bank of the Kazanka about three kilometres from the centre, was built for the 2013 Summer Universiade and used as a venue for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The 45,000-seat stadium has a wave-shaped roof and one of the world's largest digital screens wrapped around its facade — visible from the river at night.
It is the home of Rubin Kazan, the city's football team. Match days fill it with local supporters; visit in the evening when the screens are running for the best photographs. Several Universiade-era sports facilities sit nearby in a small sports cluster.
