Galiaskar Kamal Tatar Academic Theatre

The Kamal Tatar Academic Theatre is the leading Tatar-language theatre in Russia, performing classical and modern drama in Tatar with Russian and sometimes English headphone translation. The building, finished in 1986 on the shore of Lake Kaban at the edge of the Old Tatar Quarter, is a large concrete fan-shape often cited as one of the finest pieces of late-Soviet architecture in Russia.

The repertory includes adaptations of Tatar epics and contemporary plays. Visitors who do not speak Tatar still find performances rewarding because of the staging; lobby cafes and a sculpture garden run by the theatre are worth a separate look. Tickets are cheap by Western standards.
