The City Centre, running from the Kremlin south down Bauman Street to Tukay Square, is the visitor's main territory in Kazan. Restored 19th-century merchant houses, large early-Soviet government buildings, churches, cafes, and shops crowd the few square blocks; the streets are mostly pedestrianised or carry minimal traffic.
Most visitors stay within ten minutes' walk of Bauman Street and rarely need to go further for hotels, restaurants, museums, and shopping. The neighbourhood is calm and safe by Russian-city standards; the police presence around the Kremlin and Bauman is high.
