Caserón de la Capellanía

Restored colonial mansion housing the ASUR textile museum

The Caserón de la Capellanía is one of the finest restored colonial mansions in Sucre, a long whitewashed building with a generous interior courtyard at the foot of the Recoleta hill. It was built in the 17th century as the residence of a chaplaincy fund (the capellanía was an endowment that paid for a priest to say masses for a wealthy family's souls) and now houses the ASUR Indigenous Art Museum, a cafe, and a fair-trade shop selling textiles directly from the Jalq'a and Tarabuco weaving communities.

The architecture is more interesting than the average colonial house museum: thick adobe walls, wide eaves of glazed tile, and a series of rooms around the central patio that have been sensitively converted. The terrace at the back catches the afternoon sun and is a nice place for a coffee after touring the museum. Free to enter the building; the museum charges a small fee.
